Section 29.3 Deliberate Practice: Movement on the Number Line

Algebra is a skill, which means it requires practice to become proficient. But it will take more than rote repetition to get there. Deliberate practice is the thoughtful repetition of a task. For each of these sections, you will be given a list of specific skills or ideas to focus on as you practice thinking through the problems.

Focus on these skills:

  • Indicate the direction that you are facing at each step.

  • Indicate the motion at each step using arrows.

  • Present your work legibly.

Worksheet Worksheet

Instructions: Draw a movement diagram to represent the calculation and compute the result.

1.

Draw a movement diagram for \(3 + 2\) and compute the result.

2.

Draw a movement diagram for \(2 - 5\) and compute the result.

3.

Draw a movement diagram for \(6 - 4\) and compute the result.

4.

Draw a movement diagram for \(-3 + 5\) and compute the result.

5.

Draw a movement diagram for \(-5 - (-3)\) and compute the result.

6.

Draw a movement diagram for \(-4 + (-2)\) and compute the result.

7.

Draw a movement diagram for \(3 + (-4)\) and compute the result.

8.

Draw a movement diagram for \(4 - 9\) and compute the result.

9.
